A significant part of the Thai population are the refugees that have migrated across the border from Burma to escape the atrocities of the oppressive regime in power.   It is not difficult to cross the boundary line into Thailand as the refugee camps are stationed approximately 2000 meters from the river that separates the two countries. Schools built from wood and plant stalks are set up to shelter refugee children and allow them the opportunity to  learn, play and dorm.  The Burmese are distinguished by traditional makeup which resembles a white paste that is ever present on their cheeks and forehead.

However, many Burmese refugees are also discriminated, particularly in the work force. They are given some of the lowest jobs that are considered too dangerous or dirty for unskilled Thai workers.  These are mostly located in the fish industry with wages 50 to 80 percent less than those of the average unskilled Thai worker.  (Thai Freedom, 2010)  Many in the refugee camps live in worn unstable shacks made from plastic or aluminum, always at the risk of harmful mosquito bites and rat infestations.
